A missing person’s case in California has led to an unexpected—and gruesome—discovery.
While investigating the disappearance of a 95-year-old woman with Alzheimer’s disease in August, Union City Police officers found what they called a “mummified” man on the toilet of the home she once lived in, according to a police report obtained by the East Bay Times.
Police said they were asked to check the residence, which the missing woman had moved out of two years ago, by a family member during their search. Though they did not find the woman at the home, police said they discovered dried up remains in the bathroom.
“It’s really strangely common for us to find people in the restroom,” UCPD Sgt. Brandon Hayward told local outlet KRON Oct. 23. “It happens more frequently than you would expect.”
Hayward said the man’s body was likely on the toilet for weeks, if not months.
Authorities believe he died of natural causes and that no foul play was involved, per KRON and KPIX. They also believe the dead man was one of the missing woman’s two sons.
