While purchasing precious metals to hold in a self-directed individual retirement account may sound like it would be a complicated process, it doesn’t have to be — particularly if you work with a reputable provider.
Lear Capital, for instance, is a Business Consumer Alliance AAA-rated company and pairs each customer with a dedicated account representative to offer guidance, according to Kevin DeMeritt, the company’s founder and chairman.
“Simply give us a phone call,” DeMeritt says. “Talk with one of the representatives, who will get you the paperwork to transfer whatever portion of that IRA, 401(k), or 403(b) you would like over to a physical precious metals IRA — you can purchase, sell, or liquidate those precious metals at any time.”

In one of the Lear Capital reviews published on Trustpilot, Tommy F. said he appreciated the level of communication his interaction with the company involved.
“The representatives I worked with were very helpful, from providing me [with] the initial investor guide to walking me through the process,” he wrote. “Since this was my first time investing in precious metals, I was unfamiliar with the process, but they kept me informed every step of the way.”
According to Jerry P., speaking with a knowledgeable and friendly Lear Capital employee left him feeling “very satisfied” when purchasing gold.
“I picked his brain,” Jerry said in a Trustpilot review. “I asked a lot of questions and got a lot of interesting, educational [answers]. I know I will be a repeat customer for sure.”

If you’ve been considering making a precious metals purchase, Kevin DeMeritt advises familiarizing yourself with the market by looking at how a metal has performed against other investments, such as stocks or real estate, in the past — and determining how much gold, silver, or other items you’d be comfortable buying.
“People typically don’t invest enough time figuring out how to grow their retirement account,” he says. “If people get educated about precious metals, they’ll find it’s a great time to add at least some portion of their portfolio into this asset category.”
