- Director John Frances Daley used VFX to add Sophia Lillis to a battle shot in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
- Lillis couldn’t be present due to her commitment to another film, and was added in post-production.
- Despite the film’s impressive visuals, the chances of a sequel are low due to poor box office performance.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves director John Frances Daley revealed a VFX trick in the film that snuck by everyone watching. The fantasy heist film sees outlaw Edgin Darvis (Chris Pine) gather a ragtag group of heroes to rescue his daughter from Forge Fitzwilliam (Hugh Grant), the Lord of Neverwinter. The film ends with a climactic battle sequence in the city, involves characters like Sophia Lillis’ Doric, a halfling druid.
The director explained she wasn’t available to shoot some scenes because of her commitment to Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City. During reshoots, she was added alongside the other characters in post-production, making it look like she was really there the whole time.
Will There Ever Be A Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2?
Other impressive VFX appear throughout the film, such as a scene where Doric escapes Neverwinter by transforming into various animals throughout a single-take scene. With a budget of $150 million, the movie made the most of it to bring the Dungeons & Dragons world to the big screen. As Daley’s post suggests, there are still some secrets the movie holds almost a year after its release.
Despite how impressive the film’s visuals were, though, the chances of Honor Among Thieves 2 are slim due to the movie’s poor box office performance. The movie only earned $208.2 million worldwide, unable to break even despite its critical success. However, Chris Pine said in November 2023 that he’d “heard some rumors” about a sequel being developed, although nothing has been confirmed as of writing.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves takes place in the Forgotten Realms, leaving a wide array of pre-existing villains to draw on for a sequel.
It’s possible that, depending on the movie sales and on-demand performance after release, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves could earn a follow-up. If it does, then there will no doubt continue to be impressive technical elements laced throughout. For now, though, the original film can be revered for its capabilities, which may influence other VFX-heavy movies in the future.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is available for digital and physical purchase, and can be watched on Prime Video.
