Helen of Wyndhorn is set to be released in March 2024 from Dark Horse Comics, and to whet the appetite for Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and Mat Lopes’s exquisite new world, Screen Rant is delighted to take readers behind the scenes with some exclusive artwork showing Evely’s pencil work in bringing the location of Wyndhorn to life. These images show the step-by-step process of how Evely makes her jaw-dropping artwork.
These pictures show the initial pencil drawings of Wyndhorn Manor, set upon a grid defining the perspective and composition of the scene. Even in this stage, Evely’s work has a flowing, fairy-tale quality which is only refined further as she translates the sketch work into a clean version for inking.
The end result is the exquisitely detailed house of Wyndhorn, set atop a hill against sweeping clouds and scraggly brush. The house sits portentously atop the moor, commanding awe and respect. In addition to the images of Evely creating the artwork, Dark Horse has also provided a sneak peek at some of the inked and lettered interior pages for Helen of Wyndhorn, as well as a new cover by artist Greg Smallwood, seen below.
Tom King talks about his new Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow series with Bilquis Evely and Mat Lopez and dives into his take on the iconic hero.
The Exquisite Team Behind Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow Reunites
King, Evely, and Lopes’ previous work, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2021) put the creative team’s work front and center through a thoughtful and fantastic journey through space as Supergirl helps guide the young woman Ruthye to confront her father’s killer. The story is told as a flashback, with each episode highlighting different elements of Supergirl’s life, personality, and struggles. King’s style of high prose along with Evely’s fairy-tale style and Lopes’ dreamlike colors earned the series an Eisner nomination for Best Limited Series in 2022.
Fans of this style can expect a similarly breathtaking journey in Helen of Wyndhorn. Framed as a series of interviews with Helen’s former chaperone, the story flashes back to reveal Helen to the reader through her chaperone’s eyes. King’s prose and Evely’s artwork translate seamlessly from Supergirl‘s space opera pop to fairy tale intrigue as the mysterious events around Wyndhorn unfold. Supergirl‘s influence can clearly be seen in Helen herself, who whirls through her surroundings like a force of nature despite her struggles and traumas.
Helen of Wyndhorn Promises to Be Another Grand Adventure
Coming from such a storied team, Helen of Wyndhorn promises to be one of the most exciting 2024 releases from Dark Horse Comics. Getting to peek behind the curtain and see the process that goes into making such exquisite artwork is a rare opportunity, and seeing Evely bring Wyndhorn House to life is a treat to cherish.
